Faith Mushayi (28) Of House Number 813 Duma, Nyika and Nevia Mushayi (49) Of Number 906 Duma High Density Suburb in Nyika Recently Appeared Before Masvingo Magistrates Rufaro Mangwiro after they were found in possession of 2.050 Kg mbanje intended for sell.

The duo pleaded guilty to unlawfully dealing in the dangerous drug as defined in Section 156(1) (c) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.

They were sentenced to 12 months each but three were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour, leaving each to serve nine effective months in prison.

It was the State's case that on October 03, a Masvingo district crack team that included six police officers pursuing a robbery case went to Faith's house after being tipped that some of the stolen property was kept there.

Nothing of that sort was recovered there but during the search, they stumbled upon the drug which was packed in a black plastic bag, leading to her arrest though she had denied ownership of the drug which she said belonged to Nevia.

The police were then tipped on Nevia's whereabouts as she had gone into hiding after learning that the police were looking for her.

Nothing of the stolen property was found at Nevia's house but the dagga was weighed at Zimpost in the presence of both suspects.

Woman Resurfaces After 40 Years With Mermaids

Cephas Shava
MWENEZI – An 8-Year-Old Girl Who Was Reportedly Snatched Away By A Mermaid Spirit While Bathing Along A Stream Some 40 Years Ago Has Reportedly Resurfaced, TellZim News Has Heard.

Rowai Chihwakwa, of Matande village under Chief Negari in Ward 2 of Mwenezi East, resurfaced a few days ago after her family members engaged some traditional healers who performed intense rituals at the scene of her disappearance for several days.

The now grown woman is said to have disappeared while bathing along Matande stream which feeds into Runde River.

In a phone interview with TellZim News , Rowai’s brother Alfred Chihwakwa, who is MDC Alliance Mwenezi East district chairperson, confirmed that her sister was indeed back from the unknown spiritual world.

"It’s true my sister Rowai came reappeared on Saturday (October 31) after we engaged the services of a woman from Zaka. As I am speaking right now, I am with her but she is still struggling to speak and eat. She does not look that old though. We hope that by tomorrow she will be stable and as a family we will be able to divulge more information,” said Chihwakwa.

The family refused to provide TellZIm News with a picture of the returnee, saying she was still under the care of traditional healers who needed to perform all the necessary rites first.

When contacted for comment Chief Negari said he was aware that the Chihwakwa family had for several years been making efforts to retrieve their relative.

"I heard about it last night so I will look for more details about the issue. What I truly know is that the family members engaged me and they informed me that they will bring some healers who will retrieve the body of their daughter who disappeared several years ago. I authorised them to go ahead with the programme because they had been doing this almost every year," said Chief Negari.

Delta Beverages Supervisor Fails To Pay Sexual Worker

A 28-year-old Mashava sex worker recently appeared before Masvingo provincial magistrate Langton Ndokera after she was dragged to court by a Delta Beverages supervisor for seizing his cell phone and two-plate stove after he allegedly failed to pay for the night they had spent together.
Sarah Buruvuru popularly known in her circles as Lynn, pleaded guilty to unauthorised borrowing or use of property when she unlawfully took a two plate stove Chinese model and Cell C Android cell phone that belonged to Andrew Kutekwa.
Buruvuru was warned by the magistrate against unlawfully taking other people’s property and was let go as the magistrate considered that she had two little children to take care of.
It was the State’s case that on July 30, at around 02:00hrs at Liquids Bar, Kutekwa approached Buruvuru who was standing at a corner near Club Lagoon and asked to take her to his place in Rhodene.
At around 06:00 hrs in the morning, Buruvuru rose and demanded her payment but Kutekwa told her he did not have cash handy and asked her to wait until she could go to the bank and withdraw some money.
Buruvuru would, however, have none of it and she seized a two-plate stove and a black Cell C Android cell phone from Kutekwa’s house, telling him he could follow her and get his property back when he settled the debt.
As days passed Kutekwa met again with Buruvuru at Liquids Bar on November 1, and the police were alerted leading to the arrest of Buruvuru.
On November 5, the two plate stove was recovered.

Bikita Man Kills Two In-Laws In Witchcraft Row

Tiyani Hahlani

A 44-year-old man allegedly killed his mother-in-law Sonika Mupura (69) and brother in-law Farirepi Muchazvirega (43) after battering his wife over witchcraft.
The grisly incident occurred on the night of November 15.
Isau Komichi of Tanyanyiwa village under Chief Mazungunye was arrested the following morning while his victims’ bodies were found in pools of blood with multiple cuts on their heads.
“I can confirm receiving a report of murder involving a son in-law who allegedly killed his two in-laws in Bikita. The suspect has been arrested and will appear in court soon facing murder charge,” said Masvingo provincial police spokesperson, Ass Insp Kudakwashe Dhewa.
TellZim News learnt that on the day in question, Komichi was sleeping in their bedroom hut together with his wife and their six-year-old son.
He woke up in the night to find that their blanket was no longer there, and started to accuse his wife of bewitching him, saying his left leg was also mysteriously painful.
He assaulted his wife and threatened to kill her but when their six-year-old son heard the commotion, he rushed to alert Mupura.
Mupura and her 12-year-old granddaughter then rushed to the couple’s homestead and found Komichi still assaulting his wife. Komichi ordered Mupura to back off while also threatening to kill her.
Sensing danger, Mupura retreated but Komichi followed and caught her and then began assaulting her with bare hands. He then picked a wooden log and assaulted her several times on her head, seriously injuring her in the process.
Muchazvirega later followed her mother but on arrival, the assailant pounced on him as well and struck him with a brick on the head. As Muchazvirega tried to escape, he got trapped on barbed wire and was hit by another brick.
After the assault, Komichi went to Muchazvirega’s homestead looking for Eunice Muponi, Muchazvirega’ wife but he failed to find her as she had found a good hiding place.
Komichi then damaged six window panes at Muchazvirega’s three-bedroomed house.
A fellow villager, Christopher Mashamaire later reported the tragedy to the police, leading to the arrest of Komichi.

Masvingo Residents Reject 2019 Budget

…‘proposed rate hike unjustified’

Tiyani Hahlani

Some 70 residents on November 20 filed letters of rejection to the 2019 budget proposed by the Masvingo City Council, saying proposals to hike water rates by 66 percent were unjustified.
Masvingo Residents and Ratepayer Association (Murra) helped the residents to file their letters of objection with council as provided for by the Urban Councils Act.
In the budget, council proposes a 66 percent increase in the amount charged for water, meaning that residents in high density suburbs, who are currently paying around 66 cents per cubic metre of water, would be paying around $1.26 for the same amount of water.
Those in low density suburbs are currently paying around 88 cents per cubic metre of water, but they would be paying around $1.54 for the same amount.
Most of the residents rejected the proposed increase on the basis that council was currently not supplying water reliably, and that the economy was too tough to merit a rate hike.
One resident, Sungano Zvarebwanashe said she disagreed with the proposed increase as she already found the current charges exorbitant, adding that council was not doing enough for the rates she is currently paying.
“As a resident of Ward 4, I have gone through the proposed budget of 2019 and I do not agree with the proposed increment as these changes are too exorbitant. I cannot afford them as the economy is not approving and also not getting the good service delivery we are expecting from what we are paying for,” said Zvarebwanashe.
Murra spokesperson, Godfrey Mtimba told TellZim News the organisation was fully supportive of residents’ stance as current water supplies did not correspond with the money being paid by residents.
“As Murra, we stand with residents in rejecting this planned rip-off. It is many weeks now with not even a single drop of water for many residents yet we are being asked to pay more. We are dealing a council that in August and September failed to give residents water for four weeks and now it’s back to the same thing. Why then try to increase rates? Can’t they see many people cannot even afford the current charges,” said Mtimba.
Last week, the Women Coalition of Zimbabwe (WCoZ) presented a petition to council officials, saying the current water crisis was a threat to the health, safety and security of women especially.

Journalists, Police Smoke Peace Pipe

Journalist, Police Smoke Peace Pipe

By Tiyani Hahlani

MASVINGO - The cat and mouse relationship that existed between journalists and members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) will be a thing of the past as the law enforcement agency has called for cordial relations between the two parties for the promotion of peace ahead of the forthcoming elections.
Speaking at an Election Safety and Security workshop facilitated by MISA-Zimbabwe Flamboyant Hotel last weekend, national assistant police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi called on the media and the police to work together to ensure that a peaceful environment prevails during the coverage of elections.
Over the years, the police and the media have enjoyed a sour relationship with the former accusing the latter of beating them up in discharge of their duties.
"The relationship between the police and the media is like that of fish and water, we cannot do without each other. We need to work together in the execution of our duties. The police and the media are key stakeholders in as far as the provision of information during the election period is concerned.
"Let us work together to promote peace during the election period," said Chief Supt Nyathi.
He said the cases of harassment are a thing of the past as the police will work to ensure that journalists are given their space and protection in discharge of their duties.
"As the police, I want to assure you that the field will be friendly for journalists. We have urged all our officers to respect you when doing your job. We will provide you with all the information you need from the provincial offices to national," said Chief Supt Nyathi.
Of late, journalists have been caught in the cross fire with the police especially when covering protests, something which the police say will be resolved amicably.
"Journalists covering demonstrations or public disorder situations can contact our ground commanders at respective places of occurrencesso that they will know who is who. Journalists also need police protection during covering protests or any other disturbances hence we should work together," said Chief Supt Nyathi
